Sackville Heights Elementary School

Tomorrow is opening day

Evening Families,

Thank you so much for the warm reception yesterday evening.  We were so excited to welcome everyone back.  We hope that the opportunity to walk through your child's morning arrival with them was helpful.  We are encouraging families to start students off on the routine they will be continuing to help in start up tomorrow.

It is going to be another great year here at SHES!

Other Important Information:

Student supervision begins at 8:10 am. This is the earliest time students may arrive.  Dismissal is at 2:30 pm.

All students need a water bottle. Our fountains only fill up water bottles as they are no contact fountains that students cannot drink from.

Lunch: All students are permitted to stay for lunch each day. The students all eat in their classrooms, no matter if they bring their lunch or order from the cafeteria. They are supervised by lunch monitors. Please do not bring any food  that may contain peanuts or other types of nuts to school. We have several students and staff with life threatening allergies to nuts. First day for the cafeteria is September 11th. For more information about ordering from the cafeteria, the menu etc. please visit our school website.  Thank you for your cooperation!

If you are dropping off a student at school late or are picking them up early we ask that you call the school office at 902-869-4700 to arrange for a pick-up or drop-off at the front door. There is also a doorbell to the right of the front door to each the main office. We would ask that you call the office or ring the doorbell when dropping off items such as water bottles and lunches. Parents with students in the modular buildings still need to contact the main office for pick-up and drop-off. The main office needs to track all students coming and going. Parents are not permitted in the modular buildings without checking into the office.

We remind families that dogs are not permitted on our playground during school hours and dismissal times.

Student Transportation: SHES is a bussing school and families are encouraged to send students to school on the bus.

Enquiries concerning bus stops and other transportation information should be addressed with the HRCE at 902-431-4723 or transportation@hrce.ca.

The bus driver assumes responsibility for the safe transportation of all students. Students are to follow Code of Conduct while on the bus. Student misconduct will be reported according to established procedures.

Drop and Go/Traffic Safety: As our school has grown, traffic has become an issue and we continue to look at ways to improve safety measures for our students. It is very important that families dropping students off by car follow the systems we have established.

The “Drop and Go” area is just that. It is an idle free zone where parents/guardians may stop, give a quick kiss, and send their child off to school. While we encourage parents to have children take the bus, we realize that some mornings require a drive to school.

Here are our Drop and Go procedures:

• Pull your car up as far into the zone as possible to allow for smooth traffic flow.

• Do not get out of your car.

• Students get out of the car on the curbside, for safety reasons.

• Do not pass other cars in the “Drop and Go”.

• Encourage independence – while staff are there to assist when necessary, students should be able and ready to open their own door and drop off staff will be there to supervise for safety.

• If you must get out of your car to help your child, please park at the church to avoid obstructing traffic, and potential accidents/injuries.

• Backpacks should be in the backseat with students for a quick exit from vehicle.

• Once your child is safely on her/his way, pull out safely, as traffic allows.

• Have a safe and happy day. ☺

Safe Arrival:  If your child is going to be absent from school or late arriving, it is necessary that you telephone Safe Arrival at 1-833-582-6940, to alert the school. This number is available 24 hours a day to receive your message.

Students who are late must sign into the office upon arrival.

Student Medical Information:  As we prepare for the upcoming school year it is important for families to provide the school with up to date emergency medical information about your child. For children with medical conditions that may require care at school, it is important for parents/ guardians to complete the necessary forms so that we can assist your child in the event of an emergency. Below is a selection of forms pertaining to various medical conditions students may have for our convenience.

We thank you for your support and look forward to a great year ahead.
